What are urobilinogen and bilirubin?
Urobilinogen and bilirubin are important diagnostic tools in identifying diseases of the liver and biliary tract. The liver is responsible for many functions in the body, including breaking down harmful substances, regulating blood sugar levels, and producing bile for digestion. When the liver does not function properly, it can lead to a range of serious health problems, including cirrhosis, gastritis, and even cancer.

Elevated bilirubin in urine may indicate

  • hepatitis
  • bile duct obstruction
  • Liver disease (such as cirrhosis)

Elevated urobilinogen in urine may indicate

  • Liver disease
  • Hemolytic anemia (influenced by drugs, infection, or genetics)
  • Liver dysfunction

Low urobilinogen in urine may indicate

  • bile duct obstruction

Why monitor bilirubin and urobilinogen levels?

  • Maintain liver and bile duct health
  • Detect liver disease
  • Maintain gallbladder health

Interpretation of results
If urobilinogen or bilirubin is detected in a urine sample, a physician should be consulted immediately for further evaluation and management.
